Urmston Leagate allotments given new lease of life

Prospective MP for Stretford and Urmston has this week backed the local campaign to bring the community allotments in Leagate, Urmston back to life.

Visiting the site with local Cllr James Wibberley, Alex saw the Council's ambitious plans to renew the land which had been unused for some time. Plans exist for allotments, an orchard, fruit bushes, bee keeping and possibly chicken runs. The Council has already cleared the site with assistance from local volunteers and Community Payback from the Probation Service. It is hoped to be able to open the new allotments to residents in the next few months.

Alex said:

"Large parts of Stretford and Urmston have a long tradition of market gardening - producing vegetables, plants and flowers for the local town and city markets.''

"In recent years the allotment movement has grown from strength to strength with over thirty sites with over 1340 individual plots in full time use across Trafford. I fully support the work of volunteers to bring the Leagate allotments back to life and give local residents the opportunity to grow their own fruit and veg.''

"The opportunities in Leagate are enormous and I am looking forward to the allotments being handed over to residents soon.''

Alex Williams visits Urmston Grammar

Conservative Parliamentary Candidate Alex Williams recently visited Urmston Grammar school, where he met with Head Teacher, Mike Spinks and toured the school's excellent facilities.

Speaking after his visit, Alex said:

"It's vitally important to me that we protect our selective education system locally that delivers world class results for all of our children, irrespective of parental wealth or background. We have great schools in Stretford and Urmston and we need to ensure that they go on delivering the best possible start in life for our children."

"Nationally, Britain is slipping down the world league tables in Maths and English, and discipline in the classroom is a really issue. Truancy is at record levels, having risen by more than a third despite Labour spending over £1 billion to combat it. Standards are falling, and there is a growing gap between the richest and the poorest."

Campaign for sustainable future hits Urmston

Alex Williams hands free low energy light bulbs to shoppers

Alex Williams teamed up with Urmston Councillor, James Wibberley, this weekend to offer Urmston shoppers low energy light bulbs and intelligent power management sockets in a bid to keep energy costs down and help the environment.

Campaigning at a stall outside Sainsbury's in Urmston and working in conjunction with the 'Trafford is my planet' campaign, Alex and James also discussed ways that local people can make their homes more energy efficient.

Prospective MP for Stretford and Urmston, Alex said:

"In our neighbourhoods and in our homes, what seem like small changes in behaviour will actually make a huge difference. Every time we boil a kettle, leave a TV on standby or drive a car, we use energy. The more we use, the more greenhouse gases we create and the more it costs us in higher utility bills."

"Carbon emissions are falling in Trafford faster than most other areas of Greater Manchester, proving the borough really is becoming cleaner and greener. Residents in Stretford and Urmston already recycle more than elsewhere in Greater Manchester."

"By taking small steps to change our behaviour at home, we can all make even more of a difference. I positively encourage local policies of preservation and the use of green or renewable energy."
